Wellness

Let’s get one thing clear, two hours of gym five days a week, or a strict diet plan or a spa session does not define the parameters of wellness.

Wellness is multidimensional including: Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Career, Intellectual, Environmental, Social. Wellness is a full integration and the pursuit of continued growth and balance in these seven dimensions of wellness. Wellness matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. ... Therefore, it is important for everyone to achieve optimal wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensure positive interactions.

PHYSICAL WELL-BEING

Physical well-being is about being safe, sheltered and in good health and it is closely connected to mental well-being.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Emotional health and wellbeing describes how we think, feel and relate to ourselves and others and how we interpret the world around us.

MENTAL WELL-BEING

Mental health is a state of well-being in which someone knows his or her own abilities and can cope with the normal stresses of life.

PHYSICAL WELL-BEING

Physical well-being is about being safe, sheltered and in good health and it is closely connected to mental well-being. If we have good physical health, we will automatically experience better mental and emotional well-being.

Physical well-being can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve your quality of life.

Five important areas of physical wellness are:

SLEEP

It’s common knowledge that most people need 8 hours of sleep a night to stay healthy and alert. However, many people, especially young people, don’t understand the importance of maintaining a regular sleep cycle. Your body craves a regular routine especially when it comes to sleep.

EATING WELL

Eating healthy doesn’t mean feeling hungry all the time or eating nothing but lettuce for the rest of your life. Eating too much when you aren’t hungry or making yourself skip meals can have metabolic consequences that can upset your physical and mental health. Don’t forget that drinking plenty of water goes hand in hand with eating right.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Not all physical activity has to be a painful endeavor that is endured only for the sake of health. While the long-term benefits of exercise are indisputable, many struggle to make it a part of their daily life. There are hundreds of different exercise classes and methodologies that can engage you and inspire you to improve.

HYGIENE

Hygiene is defined as any action taken to maintain health and prevent disease. This can pertain to the daily practices of showering, washing hands, brushing teeth and flossing. Preventing disease or intervening with early treatment is much more convenient in the long run than ignoring your health.

RELAXATION

Relaxation is commonly thought of as only a mental exercise with only mental benefits. Scheduling time to simply relax and enjoy yourself is important to your overall health. Whether it is getting a massage, staying home with a good book or playing your favorite sport, some “me time” does everyone good.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Emotional health and wellbeing describes how we think, feel and relate to ourselves and others and how we interpret the world around us. Good emotional health and wellbeing is not only about feeling confident and happy, it is also about being positively engaged with the world and having a strong sense of self esteem.

Emotional health is an important part of overall health. People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They are able to cope with life’s challenges. They can keep problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks.

Follow these ideas to strengthen your emotional health:

EXERCISE AND MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

It protects physical and emotional health, relieves stress, and makes you feel good. You don’t have to be constantly on the go — that’s how you get run down. Spend a little time each day or each week doing something you enjoy that is completely frivolous. For example, watch TV or a silly movie, chat on the phone, play a game, or just listen to music.

DEAL WITH YOUR EMOTIONS AND BE HEALTHY INSIDE

Learn how to properly deal with stress, anger, and anxiety instead of keeping them bottled up inside. This means avoiding junk food and sticking to a healthy diet. You should also steer clear of smoking, drug use, and too much alcohol.

TREAT YOUR SENSES

Do little things that make you happy and stimulate your senses, like lighting a scented candle, buying some fresh-cut flowers, indulging in a massage, or treating yourself to your favorite food or drink.

SLEEP AND BE CREATIVE

Everyone gets cranky without enough sleep, so dedicate adequate sleep time every night. Or treat yourself to a nap every now and then. Spend some time learning new things, like a new language or skill (for example, music or knitting). Even just working in your garden can help you relax and feel satisfied.

ADOPT AN ANIMAL

Pets offer fun, relaxation, and a whole lot of love. They can encourage you to exercise, and tear your attention away from stressful activities.
